Hydroponics in Organic Ag Update, Banana Industry Suffering with Low Prices, Blue Mountain Minerals, Market News, and More...
In the summer of 2021, the pricing structure surrounding the sale of bananas in the US received national scrutiny as grower advocates argued that bananas are sold at retail prices far too low, leading to little or no returns for growers. In response, the multinational banana companies did hike the price they charge for bananas—including organic bananas—but it’s not enough.
The Coalition for Sustainable Organics (CSO) is currently working with a team of lawyers to write an amici curiae (friends of the court) brief in support of hydroponics in organic ag. The organization believes hydroponics should continue to be eligible for organic certification for a number of reasons.
In March 2021, the US District Court for Northern California ruled against the Center for Food Safety (CFS), a sustainable agriculture nonprofit, and several other plaintiffs in their fight against the eligibility of hydroponics for organic certification. Two months later, CFS filed an appeal.
