Organic Avocado Shortage, Campos Borquez, JustOne Organic, Kendra Klein, and More...
Campos Borquez was born into farming. The family-owned grower and distributor of premium produce is committed to long-term relationships based on trust, transparency and loyalty. The core of its business is rooted in hard work, determination, tenacity and a commitment to social and environmental sustainability.
Kendra Klein is senior staff scientist at Friends of the Earth (FOE), a nonprofit dedicated to environmental and social justice issues. Klein holds a PhD in Environmental Science, Policy, and Management from UC Berkeley, and her work at FOE focuses on food and agriculture. In 2019, she co-authored a peer-reviewed scientific study showing that switching from a conventional diet to an organic one significantly reduced pesticide exposure in just six days in both children and adults. The study was part of FOE’s “Organic for All” initiative, which advocates for a world where all people have access to healthy, organic food. Klein joined OPN for a conversation about her work.
JustOne Organics, a Southern Oregon company, is pioneering a new process of “gently drying” organic fruits and vegetables into a crystal form for use in such products as smoothies, soups, salads and sauces. The company has its first pilot drying plant up and running in Klamath Falls, OR, and expects to build a network of facilities near growing regions over the next several years.
The organic avocado market is red hot with the popular fruit getting a $15 to $20 premium over conventional packs for the past month and is expected to continue through May and the upcoming Cinco de Mayo holiday. “Mexico’s volume is starting to go down and California can only produce so much organic volume each week,” said Patrick Lucy of Del Rey Avocado Company, Fallbrook, CA.
