Q2, 2020 will be remembered in historical context as the period when supermarkets saw robust increases in performance across the total store as closures of most out-of-home dining options forced households to consume meals at home.
The result was strong sales and volume increases across most supermarket departments. This included the produce department where organic fruit and vegetable growth continued at a stronger pace than conventional products. For the quarter, dollar sales of organic fruits and vegetables increased by 17.0% while volume moved up at a breathtaking rate of 18.2%. Comparatively, in Q2, 2020 conventional fruits and vegetables also generated strong growth, increasing by 16.1% in dollars and 12.9% in volume.
