1. Organic Farmers to Harvest Record Acres in 2019
Organic commodity farms will harvest a record number of acres across the U.S. this year despite the weather and trade challending plaguing agriculture in 2019. According to the Annual Acreage Report, released Sept. 9 by Mercaris, farmers will harvest 3.1 million acres of U.C. land certified for organic field crop production, an increase of 7 percent over 2018.
2. Kroger First to Take Apeel Produce Coast-to-Coast
The Kroger Co. and Apeel Sciences announced Sept. 18 that Apeel’s “longer-lasting” avocados will be available in more than 1,100 Kroger stores in the U.S. Kroger will also introduce two new produce categories, Apeel asparagus and Apeel limes, through a pilot in its Cincinnati market this fall.
