BioSafe Systems’ Formulations Help Ensure Future of Agribusiness

BioSafe Systems, a biopesticide company owned by Rob Larose, takes chemical use and its effects on the environment very seriously. The company aims to lead the way in nontoxic products for crop protection, water treatment, soil regeneration, keeping animal operations healthy, and secure food safety practices.

“We work every day in research and development to find new, innovative ways to supplement or replace conventional methods with our sustainable chemistry. Our means protect investments across a range of operations,” said Patrick Clark, technical product development manager for the East Hartford, CT-based company. “Our proprietary biopesticide formulations work to ensure the future of agribusiness is protected from crop devastation due to infection or biological threats while remaining environmentally considerate."

The core philosophy of BioSafe Systems revolves around building and adding value to its customers' businesses by increasing their productivity with integrity.

“We take responsibility for our products, how they’re made and used, the impact they have on an operation’s proficiency, and the residual impact on the environment,” Clark said. “BioSafe Systems aims to maintain a reputation that illustrates family values within the company and transparency with our customers. We work passionately in the field to better circulate those values throughout all our relationships.”

The company has been very involved in organic fresh produce since inception, starting in foliar crop protection, then growing to include soil treatment for disease prevention and produce storage management to reduce product loss from decay.

“Quickly, BioSafe Systems evolved to include irrigation water treatment solutions for our end-users, then expanded heavily into hard-surface sanitation and postharvest wash water treatment for food safety,” Clark said. “In 20 years, BioSafe Systems developed into a field-to-fork company with solutions throughout the entire production cycle.”

BioSafe Systems proudly launched two new products recently—CalOx FT, an advanced liquid nutritional and crop enhancement product for a wide range of agricultural and horticultural crops; and BT NOW, a water-based, liquid bioinsecticide that offers highly effective control of lepidoptera on a wide variety of crops. The biggest innovative project BioSafe Systems has been working on is OxyFusion PAA, an on-demand generation unit used to treat water in multiple industries, including irrigation water and postharvest wash water.

“To streamline the production of our proprietary chemistry, this unit is about the size of a household refrigerator and produces equilibrium PAA onsite,” Clark said. “Bulk precursor chemicals are delivered to clients with the OxyFusion unit, and BioSafe Systems’ service team of technicians ensure proper installation, follow-up maintenance, and assistance.”

Each OxyFusion comes equipped with smart technology that automates the production and dosing process while monitoring different data points and storing them digitally for future regulatory compliance.

“By limiting direct delivery of pre-mixed solution and only requiring water and electrical inputs, we can shrink the carbon footprint of our company and our customers’,” Clark said. “Our chemical and mechanical engineers work diligently on each iteration to suit the unique needs of a production facility.”

The company’s newest commitment to innovation is a specialized research facility. Through a recent acquisition, BioSafe Systems chose a more sustainable approach by repurposing an old, unused building into its new innovation center.

“The facility houses an advanced laboratory specially equipped to meet the needs of our research and development department, and therein BioSafe Systems will conduct the experimentation needed to further improve our products and their performance,” Clark said. “Moreover, the old lab area will be combined with pre-existing space from a connected warehouse to expand the service center, which allows BioSafe Systems the vital space to increase equipment design and production, improving the advanced tools available to our customers.”

BioSafe Systems is always looking for new opportunities for growth that align with its mission to provide reduced-risk chemistries with minimal negative impact on the health and safety of people and the environment.

“Therefore, our company strategy will remain the same, focusing on identifying areas where we can have positive impacts on our communities,” Clark said. “Any growth we experience is a direct result of our efforts in working with our customers and the industry to provide accessible, sustainable solutions, tools, and support needed for success.”
