Red Sun Farms Touts a Seed-to-Plate Approach

Red Sun Farms was created as the result of the shared vision and passion of a team in Mexico and Canada.

“Both groups [in Mexico and Canada] were committed to selling the very best high-tech greenhouse peppers, tomatoes, and cucumbers but knew they needed to provide their customers with a year-round supply,” said Carlos Visconti, CEO, USA and Canada Operations for the Kingsville, ON-based company. “Together, the leadership team at Red Sun Farms built a vertically integrated business model that ensures quality, food safety, flavor, and supply throughout the year.”

This vision has resulted in farms in Mexico, the US, and Canada, with distribution centers throughout each of the three countries to support demand.

In the organic fresh produce category, the company’s growers carefully choose the seed varieties and go above and beyond the strict USDA organic requirements at all of their farms.

“The master growers at Red Sun Farms have hand selected varieties of organic tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers that will delight and exceed our customers' flavor expectations,” Visconti said. “These varieties offer the organic consumer solutions for snacking, complementing their favorite dish, or creating exciting new culinary experiences. Our goal is to provide consumers with nutritious and healthy options that will give them the tools to make mealtime and snack-time solutions that meet all types of dietary needs.”

As the consumer appetite for organics increases across the US and Canadian marketplaces, Red Sun Farms has found it challenging to meet the demands of all its customers.

Red Sun Farms’ products represent stability and innovation in the greenhouse industry. “One call provides you with a 12-month greenhouse program, complete with personalized, experienced greenhouse sales and marketing specialists,” Visconti said. “Thanks to distribution centers at our state-of-the-art growing facilities in the US, Canada, and Mexico, it means shorter travel times, less shrink, fresher produce, and ultimately, happier consumers.”

In 2021, Red Sun Mexico is on track to deliver an additional 35 acres for the 2021 winter season. This new acreage will reaffirm Red Sun Farms as the largest vertically integrated high-tech greenhouse in North America.

Red Sun Farms has also committed to enlarging its state-of-the-art distribution centers to support the greenhouse developments. In this regard, the company's facility in Pharr, Texas will increase its capacity by 40,000 square feet of cold storage, while its Kingsville, Ontario facility is moving forward with an additional 22,500 square feet of cold storage this year.

“As food insecurity has become a reality for many families in North America, we believe that providing fresh and nutritious produce year-round is critical in building healthy communities,” Visconti said. “Ensuring that our supply is not interrupted ensures that we do our part in providing nutritious options to retailers and consumers.”

The company’s high-tech greenhouses feature 100-percent recycling of water and nutrients that have not been touched by the plants.

Early this year, Red Sun Farms unveiled a new logo, which incorporates the company's iconic butterfly and maintains the bright, bold colors that honor the history of the brand, ensuring continuity and consistency.

“We expect to remain a leader in the true greenhouse vegetable industry by continually improving our operations and developing partnerships with our customers, communities, and employees,” Visconti said.
