With fourth of July right around the corner, it’s officially watermelon season! California organic melon growers dominate production for the national marketplace in summertime and coordinate crop peaks to coincide with the major holidays.
An analysis of scan store data, during a 52-week period ending April 1, 2018, revealed that organic fresh produce accounted for 17 percent of total produce volume growth in California, which is much greater than its market share.
Born, raised, and educated in Boston, the East Coast is also where retailer Paul Kneeland learned the produce business. He spent about 36 years between New England and New Jersey working produce for several chains, including 26 years with Roche Brothers and another eight with Kings Markets/Balducci’s.
