The Organic Trade Association (OTA) hatched an idea in 2010 that would have provided an estimated $30 million annually for the organic community. The money would have been collected through a USDA check-off program providing money for organic research, technical assistance for new organic farmers, and consumer education about organic.
The latest explosive trend in fresh produce—pre-packaged and ready-to-use vegetable noodles and crumbles—seems to exhibit tremendous expansion and staying power. Retailers, growers, and processors continue to follow this trend, seeing its long-term power and value in organic produce.
Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) services have become available across the country, delivering fresh local produce and farm goods to homes and businesses. Fresh Life Organics is doing just that in South Florida, the result of founder Jessica Papesh’s personal struggle with maintaining a healthy diet and faced with limited selection of quality, fresh items.
In 1984, a couple of city kids from Manhattan with no farming experience landed on a 2½-acre raspberry farm in the verdant Carmel Valley of California. They had intended just to take a year’s back-to-the-land break before going off to grad school. The story is well-known and often-told; you probably recognize it as the early days of Earthbound Farm and its co-founders, Drew and Myra Goodman.
