Driven by demand, growers are continuing to increase their production of organic mushrooms with brown mushrooms (baby bellas) leading the way, though shoppers can find an organic option for all the popular varieties.
When you enter a supermarket, what's the first thing that attracts you? Generally, it's the produce department. Why is that? Probably because the department is located up front and all the colors draw attention to the visual presentation. The fresh produce department is one of the prime factors consumers choose a particular store to do their overall food shopping.
In 2012, Javier Zamora graduated from ALBA, a 100-acre training facility that teaches hard-working, low-income farm workers and aspiring farmers seeking a better life through growing organic fresh produce and began farming 6 acres of row crops. Today, the charismatic grower farms 75 acres producing 25 different crops and employing 20 full time and 30 seasonal workers.
The Organic Farming Research Foundation (OFRF) is offering an online training program covering a variety of topics related to organic production as part of its educational outreach goals. The first module in the series was released last month and focuses on organic soil health management.
