NatureFresh Farms, one of North America's largest greenhouse vegetable growers, said it has signed a deal with Dutch horticulture firm Van der Knaap Group to use its patented cultivation system to grow organic peppers.
NatureFresh operates 130 acres of greenhouse production and five distribution centers at its headquarters in Leamington, Ontario. The company also maintains a recently opened 60,000-square-foot facility in Toledo, Ohio, to service 45 acres of greenhouse tomato production in Delta, Ohio.
Van der Knaap developed the cultivation system for growing organically in greenhouses based on a reactor that converts proteins into nitrates (NO3) nitrogen.
The new agreement will see NatureFresh boost its organic peppers greenhouse production from nine acres to 15 acres in 2018, with a goal of 30 acres by 2019.
